Vision
Our Plan of Action to Help 1.5 Million Haitians
On January 12th of this year, a massive earthquake rocked Haiti leaving 1.5 million,
already deeply poor and suffering people, homeless. To address this latest crisis, many
suggestions for permanent housing have been presented to the Haitian Government. The
desire of the Haitian people is to rebuild a better community. Malcolm Reading
Consultants (MRC) provides independent advice and hands-on support to clients involved
in capital projects such as the Haitian Housing Competition. The purpose of this
competition is to investigate various forms of permanent housing. MRC is conducting a
Housing Expo in Port-au-Prince this October to showcase these housing designs. This 2nd
phase of the competition is by invitation-only and participants will build a prototype of
their proposed house. The winners of this competition will build houses for the 1.5
million displaced citizens.
To Build a Village™ has accepted MRC's invitation to build two demonstration homes
consistent with the Caribbean Uniform Building Code and GTFBC recommendation for
Haiti. Our demonstration homes will be constructed of Green Earth Bloc and EPS Foam
respectively. These similar technologies provide extreme protection for their occupants,
and at the same time allow for flexibility during the construction phase. To Build a
Village™ is confident that its homes will be chosen as the prototype for this monumental
project because the structural integrity of these insulated homes has the ability to
withstand earthquakes and hurricanes.
To Build a Village™ is invited to participate in Phase II – Lot 2 - the development of the
community village master-plan. Our proposal for this competition embodies more than
just building houses. Our efforts will halt the cycles of destruction that have plagued Haiti
and will restore the ability of future generations to meet their needs. As such, To Build a
Village™'s goal is to take families out of temporary tents, relentless mud, and poor
sanitation facilities and to provide insulated, solid-roof integrated structures. We will
design, teach, and oversee the building of 300 life-sustaining and productive villages. Our
approach is to "Give a person a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a person to fish and
he will eat for a lifetime."
